Sound Track Creation | Project 3 | Wonder

About
This lesson we decided to dedicate our time to creating a soundtrack that could be used as the theme music and or background music to our final animation, moreover using and manipulating multiple audio clips in garageband I was able to create a useful and well laid out sound track.

Genre /Style
I chose the mix up and compilation of genre's and style I did because I believed that they would work well with the animation overall and ensuring it was completed according with the relevant house style and finish. Retaining house style is important within any project because it is the fundamental building blocks towards putting together a finished project.

Relevance
The soundtrack has relevance to the project as the story is about adventure and drama for example there is sudden change between each verse that plays relevance to the overall narrative of an adventurer and a lost snowman.

Representations of Ethics in Animations | Project 2 | Research

Why does the write of the article believe Rio 2 is problematic in terms of its representations?
The writer believes that the movie can be seem to be racist when it comes to the actors playing the characters. He makes clear that there is some racial pyramid uses within the movie for example all the white-voiced characters at the top (British underneath America) while darker brown skinned voice characters are at the bottom.
What are PEPs and why are they an issue for racial representation?
PEPs stands for Problem contexts, Entertainment contexts, and Performance contexts. He tells us how black people have to be above normal in animated films, they either have to excite the audience or act the villain to play a part.
Why does Da Costa believe we end up with stereotypes in animation?
He believes that animation companies are sell outs moreover they try and gain more for themselves. They choose the financial gain over moral obligation which causes the film to be rushes and racial stereotypes aren't dealt with.
What does Turbo say about social mobility?
Turbo tells us that social mobility is only available for white people, while the other characters (blacks, Mexicans and so on) are given stereotypical jobs, for example the Mexican characters in Turbo are given jobs at a Taco Stand.

Voice Talent | Project 2 | The Chilled Snowman

Story | Project 2 | The Chilled Snowman

Short
In the beginning there is a lonely freezing cold snowman who seeks warmth and companionship. Through achieving this he realises greater potential in life. Moreover on his travels he encounters meetings with several characters including a Penguin and another adventurer who aid him on achieving his ambition in life. The expected running time of the animated short would be 1:40 - 2:30 minutes.

The animation will be a short film and will not be made into a TV series or animated online series. I chose to make the animation a short film because I recognised the potential in it only being a short film, moreover no additional sequels could be made from it.

Individual Storyboard | Project 2 | The Chilled Snowman

Form
We chose to do our animation project as a short film. We knew this would be the best option as our style of narrative and storyline would be suited to be an online show or on the television as it is a one off storyline that would work through a continuous web or TV series. The narrative as a continuing web series would not make practical and logical sense.

Animation Type
The animation type we selected to use was rotoscoping this was because this most suited our drawing needs, more-over we liked this style because it was was artistic and contemporary and you could greater understand the narrative storyline as it made greater sense and the viewer can understand the storyline better through the medium of this animation type. The style of Rotoscoping in the film is essential to make sure that people fully understand the storyline and make logical sense of it as the narrative can be explained throughout the look of the film.

Genre /Style
We chose the genre and style of our film to be action and adventure penas well as an art style form. We chose to make our film these genres because that was the most effective use of our storyline and it is what our storyline is. The selected genre's are an effective explanation of what are film is about and the genre's work because the film is based around two adventurers seeking the light and going on an adventure.

Storyline
In the short film a lonely adventurer is seen interacting with his surroundings and on his travels meets a small snowman that is seeking comfort from a companion and meets the adventurer. They go on travels and adventures, on the adventures they come across things in their path that is stopping them going forth, they overcome these initial fears and triumph on

Animation Testing | Wonder

Rotoscope Animation Testing - Running Man
This was the running animation test that my partner in this project Josh made. Here was his synopsis.

Here is the first animation test of 'The Traveler' jumping, as frustrated as it was, I succeeded in drawing frame by frame of the actor jumping. How I animated this was in the software Photoshop, I made the original video into layers and drew over each frame and colored it in. I learnt that too many layers and drawing them over can be stressful as well, so I changed the limit into four, as it makes it easier for me to organise the clips.

Inspiration Behind Set Design | Wonder

We designed the set in our short film to be based around mountain tops and a misty night, moreover we wanted the background to show the narrative alone and express gratitude and a storyline. It was important for us to show story through the background as thats the first thing the viewer sees when they look at the film. When creating a short film it is important to focus on setting the scene as well as educating the viewer with the storyline.

Idea Inspiration | Wonder [Short Film]

Introduction
The inspiration for the cartoon that I am going to create in conjunction with a friend in class comes from many sources, including childhood cartoons and memories. Moreover inspiration from multiple sets of indie games and music comes into play and inspired this idea.

Existing Media Product
Limbo
An existing media product that can relate to that of which I want to create could be the hit indie PC Game developed by PlayDead Studios called Limbo which was a dark and disturbing contemporary style game that featured a rich and in depth narrative and storyline, moreover it featured a small and disturbed child character who is lost in an dark and disturbing world seeking freedom and all his achieves is retribution.

Walking in the Air
On the opposite end of the spectrum, the worldwide release of the hit Single Starring Aled Jones that was made into an animated Short titled "Walking in the Air" was also an inspiration for my idea. This is because the snowman in the film is seeking freedom and goes on an adventure flying around with a companion all night long.

Animation Trends

Animated Movies
Common Trends in Animated Films are they are most comely sequels to movies that have already done well, animation creators do this to try and create another successful film. They are often made around franchise building and building on an already made or newly made franchise, this can then lead to the selling of franchise products and DVD's etc. They are made most commonly to cater to a family audience's and young audiences, this is to build on an already successful Target Market. The majority of animated films are computer animated rather then being made using alternate styles of animation for example rotoscope or hand drawn.
Animation Audiences are usually established over a few films and creators of new animated films can harness this audience base and entice them into ==-[~S

Use of Shapes in Cartoons

Character Design

Coleman
Character Design is the combination of physical traits and narrative. The look of the character has to be informed by the personality and context, genre location and setting. The face is the primary channel to express emotion of a person (Colman), hence the many big headed cartoon characters. A lot can be said in the posture and body language.

Salarski
Hands are an effective way in expressing personality, how a character carries their weight also informs us about personality - particularly which body part they lead with.

Examples
Chest - Confidence strength heroic.

Pelvis - Lazy, laid back.

Head - Implies intelligence

Knees - Cowardice

Power and dominance revolve around expanding.
Power: take space up + expand.
Weakness: making small, taking low space.

Walking Bear Animation | Explanation

The walking bear animation was created and we downloaded it exclusively through the blog. From there we imported it into After Effects and started to animate the arms and legs, we did this by adding pins to the beginning of the arms and the beginning of the legs. After that was done using key frames we animated the bear and made it move. Using the correct amount of key frames and spaces to execute the perfect animation.
